Gustavo A. Benejam Psychology

Gustavo A. Benejam, Psy.D., M.S. Licensed Clinical Psychologist

I am a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami FL and I offer individual, couples, and family therapy. I work with my clients to enrich their lives while resolving issues related to depression, anxiety, trauma, loss, major life events, relationship challenges, and self-development.

My approach always involves developing a deep understanding of you and your unique experience with warmth, non-judgment, and respect. Beyond targeting and improving your specific symptoms and providing you with effective coping skills, our work together will focus on enriching your life in a holistic way by increasing your awareness and self-understanding, improving your relationships with yourself and others, and connecting you with purpose and meaning.

Guided by my client’s unique needs and circumstances, I combine powerful treatment approaches that include insight-oriented therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

I received my Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology from an APA-accredited program at Albizu University in Miami. I completed my internship at the Faulk Center for Counseling. I have completed externships and received specialized training at various sites including Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Rehabilitation Psychology program, Florida Forensic Psychology, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

I offer all services fluently in both English and Spanish.

My Philosophy

HOLISTIC, INTEGRATIVE AND TAILORED TO YOU

I believe in people’s ability to heal and grow by learning about themselves, improving their relationships with others and the self, and developing powerful skills and habits.

I take an individualized and holistic approach when working with my clients. This means that I prioritize learning about the uniqueness of my clients’ world and all the moving parts of their experience (e.g., values, emotions, relationships, cultural identities, histories, work, health, etc.). Because our lives function as systems, no one part is isolated from the others. Instead they are interwoven and interdependent. Amazingly, positive change in one area of our lives inevitably seeps into the other aspects.

POWERFUL CHANGE THROUGH SELF COMPASSION & ACCEPTANCE

I find that my clients are most powerfully able to achieve change and attain their goals through the development of self compassion, insight, and empowerment. Incredible changes happen when we first understand, make peace with, and reclaim even the most challenging parts of ourselves and our experiences!  This means shifting approaches from rejection of undesirable experiences and limiting self criticism, to becoming curious about, healing, and integrating ourselves with compassion. Additionally, it requires moving out of familiar patterns that no longer serve us and into a new place of empowerment, movement, and choice.

The therapeutic relationship is incredibly important in setting the stage for all of these changes. It becomes a safe and powerful space to explore fears, interpersonal dynamics, and create corrective experiences collaboratively. I always meet my clients with warmth, compassion, patience, and non-judgment.

Therapy is an enriching, empowering, and rewarding process that can be utilized to bring about desired change, achieve goals, gain understanding of yourself and others, and address all sorts of challenges in your life. You may have specific mental health symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, trauma responses, etc.) or you may simply wish to embark on a journey of self-development and growth.

If you have not partaken in therapy before, the process can seem intimidating. Whether loved ones have recommended that you seek support or you are questioning your own need for therapy, I encourage you to call me for a consultation (954-652-6344).

I will answer any questions and help you determine if therapy would be a good fit for your situation.

Most of my clients benefit from one, 50-minute session per week. However, the frequency of therapy depends on your individual circumstances and needs. Some clients seek therapy every other week or every three weeks, while others will attend therapy twice weekly during difficult moments or transitions. The decision for the best frequency of therapy is an important conversation to have collaboratively and one that we can arrive at together.

Please reach out to me 954-652-6344 in order to receive the most up to date listing of my accepted insurance or to inquire about my out-of-pocket rates.

Planning for the financial expense of therapy is an important part of the process. Understanding any financial restraints or limitations can help us to collaboratively plan out your therapy process.

I offer therapy services both in person and via telehealth. Several of my clients utilize a hybrid approach to accommodate their schedules. I am able to tailor your therapy to your schedule and needs.

I offer services fully in English or Spanish. I have experience in working with Depression, Bipolar disorders, Anxiety, and Trauma-related challenges. I am an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist and have experience in working with sexual and gender minorities and their loved ones.
